Interesting reading in the “European Digital Journalism Study 2009“

The Oriella PR Network, the alliance of communications agencies in 20 countries around the world, today launches The European Digital Journalism Survey 2009 – a pan-European insight into how the digitisation of media has changed the working practices of the journalist and also the effects of the recession on the industry. A total of 354 journalists were polled from across the national, trade, regional and broadcast media from Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

It is not surprising that the recession has had an impact on the media landscape. More than two thirds of the Swedish journalists believe that the number of printed media will shrink dramatically. And one in ten have already made a complete switch from traditional to online.

However, despite the repercussions of the recession, journalists remain personally upbeat. 84 percent confirm they are just as happy or happier in their current roles. In Sweden, this figure is as high as 93.5 percent!

The survey is also interesting reading for the PR and communication industry. We all live an increasingly digitized lifestyle and consume more and more online media. The pressure is therefore high on companies and organizations to manage new methods of communication – and to understand the need for transparency and openness that comes with social media. As communicators, we definitely have an important and strategic role to play.
